Cupra Australia is one of the newer names in local showrooms. The Spanish brand sells sporty hatchbacks and SUVs built on Volkswagen Group parts, Its cars carry copper trim and a bold badge, and the range leans heavily on plug-in hybrid and electric power.
When this post first ran it mixed brand slogans with launch-era news items. This refreshed version sets out the brand's history, how it arrived here, what it sells now and the checks worth making before you buy one.
Where Cupra came from
Cupra started life as Cupra Racing, the motorsport division of SEAT, and the name is short for "Cup Racing" 1. The first Cupra-badged car was the 1996 SEAT Ibiza GTI 2.0 16V Cupra Sport, a special edition celebrating SEAT's win in the 1996 FIA 2-Litre World Rally Cup 1.
For years after that, Cupra was a badge on the fastest version of a SEAT. That changed in January 2018, when it became a standalone brand 1. It is based in Martorell near Barcelona 1. The brand is owned by SEAT S.A., which is part of the Volkswagen Group 1.
The badge itself is two intersecting triangles, designed by Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos 1.
The first models of the new brand
The model history shows how quickly the brand grew:
- the Ateca SUV, its first model as a standalone brand, in October 2018 1;
- the Leon, in February 2020 1;
- the Formentor, in March 2020, the first Cupra not shared with a SEAT 1;
- the Born, its first electric model, in February 2021 1;
- the Tavascan, its second electric model, in April 2023, built by Volkswagen Anhui in China 1;
- the Terramar, in 2024 1.
Production grew with the range, from 81,839 cars in 2021 to 246,749 in 2023 1.
How Cupra Australia launched
Cupra arrived in Australia in July 2022 2, as a sub-brand within the Volkswagen Group 2. Launch Edition cars were offered for pre-sale earlier that year 2.
The launch range had three models 2:
- the Leon hatchback, in V, VZ, VZe and VZx grades 2;
- the Formentor crossover, in the same four grades 2;
- the Ateca SUV, in VZx form only 2.
GoAuto reported in July 2022 that first deliveries would start in August, with most of the brand's "Cupra Garage" sites opening on 1 August 3. There were nine of them at the start, across most capital cities plus the Gold Coast and Canberra 3.
A different way to buy
Cupra did not copy the traditional dealer model. GoAuto described online ordering as the main sales channel, backed by the Cupra Garages and agent locations, with transparent driveaway pricing 3. At launch, every model came with a five-year warranty with no kilometre limit, plus three years of scheduled servicing 3.
Fixed national pricing makes comparing offers simpler, but it also means less room to haggle. It shifts the focus of a purchase from negotiating the price to choosing the right variant and options, and to checking the finance and trade-in terms carefully. The launch engines
The 2022 range relied on turbocharged petrol engines and a plug-in hybrid. According to RACQ's launch report 2:
- the Leon V used a 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder making 140 kW and 320 Nm 2;
- the Leon VZ made 180 kW and 370 Nm 2;
- the Leon VZe plug-in hybrid combined a 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for 180 kW and 400 Nm 2;
- the Leon VZx made 221 kW and 400 Nm 2;
- the top Formentor made 228 kW 2;
- the Ateca VZx made 221 kW and 400 Nm, with all-wheel drive and a 0 to 100 km/h claim of 4.9 seconds 2.
Prices at the launch, as listed by RACQ in June 2022, started at $43,990 before on-road costs for the Leon V and $50,690 for the Formentor V 2. The Ateca VZx, the only Ateca offered, was listed at $60,990 2. Those figures are history now, not a guide to what a new Cupra costs today.
Those were the specifications at launch. Several have changed since, as the next section shows. You can read RACQ's launch report for the full launch line-up 2.

The Cupra range today
By August 2025, GoAuto listed five models in the Australian range 4. The electric Born was off sale at the time 4. It also reported a rolling update across most of the range from late 2025 into early 2026, with new styling, new batteries and motors for the electric and plug-in models, plus revised petrol engines to meet the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard 4.
The main points of that plan were:

- Formentor: the brand's top seller, due for a facelift in early 2026, with the 228 kW VZx kept and a 1.5 litre mild hybrid replacing the 2.0 litre all-wheel-drive car as the entry engine 4.
- Leon: an updated range from October 2025, including the Sportstourer wagon, with a 110 kW 1.5 litre mild hybrid as the new entry hatch 4.
- Terramar: launched locally in August 2025, with plug-in hybrid versions due before Christmas 2025 4.
- Born: withdrawn earlier in 2025 and due back in early 2026 as a 240 kW rear-drive VZ with a 79 kWh battery and a claimed 570 km WLTP range 4.
- Ateca: still on sale in limited numbers, with supply tapering 4.
GoAuto's August 2025 report has the detail by model. Plans like these can change. Check the current range and specification before you shop, and confirm the exact variant on any car you look at.
Sales so far
Cupra is still a small player here. GoAuto reported that its Australian sales rose 40.3% year on year to June 2025, led by the Formentor with 909 deliveries, the run-out Born with 309 and the Tavascan with 170 4.
Electric and plug-in Cupras
Electrification is central to the brand. The Born and Tavascan are its two fully electric models 1, and plug-in hybrid versions of three other models are in the Australian plan 4.
The Tavascan is worth a note for buyers who care where a car is made: unlike the Spanish-built models, it is built by Volkswagen Anhui in China 1. The returning Born was due back as a single high-output version first, with a smaller battery under consideration for later 4.
A plug-in hybrid suits a driver who can charge at home and does mostly short trips, because short runs can be covered on battery power while the petrol engine handles longer drives. If you are weighing up the options, our guides to how long an electric car takes to charge and whether electric vehicles are better for the environment cover the basics.
How reliable are Cupras?
Reliability data for a young brand is thin, especially in Australia. The best large public data set comes from Germany. In its 2026 breakdown statistics, the German motoring club ADAC named three Cupra models among the most reliable cars in their class: the Born, the Formentor and the Leon 5. The study counts technical breakdowns its patrol attended during 2025, across 158 model series 5.
The same study found that a flat or failing 12 volt battery caused 45.4% of all the breakdowns it counted 5, a reminder that the humble starter battery is still the weak point in most modern cars, petrol or electric.
German driving and German model mixes are not the same as Australian ones, so treat that as a good sign rather than a promise. Our wider look at the most reliable European cars explains how the ADAC study works and what it does and does not show.
Buying a Cupra: what to check
Whether you are buying new or second hand, a few checks are worth the time.
New
- Confirm the model year. With a range in the middle of a facelift, two cars with the same name can have different engines and screens.
- Ask about the battery and charging on a plug-in or electric model, including what the warranty covers.
- Read the warranty terms in writing. The launch offer was five years and unlimited kilometres 3, but terms can change.
Used
- Check the service history against the maker's schedule.
- Look at the early cars carefully. The first Australian deliveries began in August 2022 3, so the oldest cars are now several years old and some will be near the end of a five-year warranty.
- Run a vehicle history check for money owing and write-off records before you pay.

What to take away
Cupra is a performance-flavoured Volkswagen Group brand with a racing name and a short but busy history. Its range is moving quickly towards hybrids and electric cars. It has been in Australia since 2022 2, and it is refreshing almost every model it offers 4.
For buyers that means two things: plenty of choice, and plenty of change. Know exactly which version you are looking at, compare it with its Volkswagen Group cousins, and you will get a better car for your money. A test drive of both the petrol and the plug-in versions is the quickest way to learn which one suits how you actually drive.
