Subaru Australia History and Motorsport

Subaru is driven by innovation. In everything we do, we strive to anticipate the needs of our customers and put them first. We’ve asked “what if?” for 60 years.

Subaru asked in 1996 “What if you combined the capabilities of a four-wheel drive with the practicality and comfort of a station wagon?” This is how the Sport Utility Vehicle came to be. The Subaru Outback was the first family SUV to be popular in Australia. It is still one of Australia’s most loved and awarded SUVs.

Subaru’s engineers strive to improve the safety of every model. This is why Subaru has received the highest ANCAP rating.

They asked in 2014 “What if there was another set of eyes watching the road?” and the result was EyeSight(r), a technology award-winning system that uses cameras facing forward to scan the road for hazards.

Our Motorsport team then asked, “What if, breaking with tradition, we named Molly Taylor the first female Motorsport Driver?” This thinking was rewarded in 2016 when Molly Taylor became the only female to win the Australian Rally Championship.

Our engineers then built on this “what if?” thinking with next-generation tech. Subaru’s new innovative driver-focus tech, the Driver Monitoring System, personalizes the driving experience and delivers convenience and safety.

The innovation continues each year, as shown by the new 2021 Subaru Forester Hybrid AWD & Subaru XV Hybrid AWD – designed with a self-charging e-Boxer electric engine and an innovative petrol engine.

Subaru has had a remarkable 60-year history of innovation. We will continue to ask “what if?” for the next 60 years and beyond

Subaru: A Brief History

Subaru is known for offering intelligently designed and highly capable vehicles. Subaru entered the automotive industry in 1954 but not until 1968 that America experienced the innovative engineering of the Japanese company. Subaru 360, the first Subaru sold in America, was marketed as cheap and ugly. But it featured the kind of engineering Subaru is known for today.

In 1970, the Subaru Star was introduced. It was a much more attractive car than its predecessor, but it continued the Subaru tradition of offering customers practicality, value and functionality.

Subaru was unstoppable by the end of the 70s. The Japanese automaker received awards from American automotive media and saw extraordinary sales. Subaru introduced the 4WD Station Wagon to America during this period. This design and configuration is still available today.

Subaru was praised for its engineering prowess and design in the 1980s. The Subaru BRAT was the most fuel-efficient 4WD car available. The Subaru XT Coupe was the next model. The aerodynamic design of this model won a lot of praise.

Subaru Justy’s record-breaking performance at Bonneville Salt Flats is proof of Subaru’s mastery in the field. Subaru’s rally-spec Impreza was a three-time World Rally Champion in a Row by the 1990s.

Subaru’s most famous model arrived in 1996. Subaru Outback, a Sports Utility Wagon and the first in the automobile industry of its type was introduced in 1996. The Subaru Forester won awards in the SUV market.

Subaru has grown stronger than ever in the new millennium. In 2001, the Subaru Baja became America’s favourite off-road vehicle. By the automaker’s 50th anniversary in 2008, Subaru would be recognized for its brilliant Boxer (horizontally opposed) engine design. The all-new Subaru Legacy was introduced a year later. That same year, the IIHS awarded every Subaru model the Top Safety Pick.

Subaru continues to make safe, practical, and high-performance vehicles, such as the Boxer engine, and Symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Subaru is the vehicle of choice for Americans, whether they are on a daily commute to work or going off-road.
