1. Transfagarasan Highway – Romania
Romania has one of the most beautiful highways in the world. Top Gear rated it as one of the most beautiful journeys in the world, and we could not agree more. You’ll be travelling across the Fagaras Mountains, which are over 6,500 feet high.
This 56-mile stretch features eerie tunnels, and views that are in keeping with Dracula’s country. This is a great day-long drive with lots of twists. Our supercar of preference for Tranfagarasan is the Lamborghini Gallardo. Be sure to stop by the beautiful glacial Balea Lake on your way.
2. The Stelvio Pass – Italy
The next stop is the Italian Alps. The Stelvio Pass is only 29 miles in length, but it packs 75 hairpin bends. This mountain pass has a maximum elevation of 9,045 feet, so it offers spectacular views as well as more than a few challenges.
This road is not only popular because of the stunning alpine landscape. Sir Stirling Moss crashed famously on this road during a classic race. Imagine driving an Italian Grand Tourer along the tracks of famous drivers from years gone by. Stelvio Pass should be at the top of your list.
3. Milford Road – New Zealand
New Zealand has some of the most beautiful roads in the world. It’s well worth the trip to New Zealand. Milford Sound is located at the end of the 80-mile Milford Road. You can drive in a relaxed manner here, without the high-octane hairpins and extreme elevation.
As you travel through Fiordland National Park and past fjords, you’ll see spectacular views. Lord of The Rings enthusiasts may even recognize the scenery as this was one of the filming sites for the trilogy.
4. Ruta 40 – Argentina
Our next trip will be in the Southern Hemisphere. Ruta 40 in Argentina is one of the world’s longest scenic drives. The road is 3,000 miles in length and the highest national highway in the world at 16,600 feet.
In Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park, you’ll see not only one but many different landscapes as you drive past Lake Argentina Viedma and the Andes. You can also glimpse Fitz Roy and Cerro Tore.
5. Lysevegen Mountain Road – Norway
The Lysevegen mountain road has it all. Its breathtaking scenery, hairpin bends and elevations make for a spectacular view. You will be able to see the route through the clouds from over 3,100 feet.
You’ll find 27 hairpins on the 18-mile stretch. It makes for an exciting drive. This drive is a great opportunity to stop and enjoy the valley, fjord or Andersvatn Lake.
6. Karakoram Highway from Pakistan to China
The highway connects Pakistan with China. The Kunjerab Pass is over 800 miles long and rises to 15,784 feet. As you pass through the Himalayas and Hindu Kush mountain ranges, as well as the Karakoram, the landscape is unmatched.

The road, which is 50 miles in length and has two lanes, offers views of cedar forests and valleys. Mountain goats and grizzlies also live in varied terrain.
12. Amalfi Drive – Sorrento to Positano, Italy
