Bugatti’s V-16 Engine

The New V-16 Engine from Bugatti is Naturally Aspirated

Bugatti is retiring its iconic W-16 engines. Don’t worry though, 33 years after the Cizeta Moroder V16T obscure engine, a brand new V-16 is just around the corner. Molsheim will unveil its next hypercar in June, featuring a powerful engine without forced induction. The sixteen-cylinder beast has been given new details.

Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti-Rimac, shared some initial details during the Future of the Car Summit in London. The Croatian entrepreneur and engineer, Mate Rimac, 36 years old revealed that the V-16 will not have turbocharging. This is a major departure from both the Chiron and Veyron as well as their predecessors, the EB110. All three cars were equipped with quad-turbo engines.

The founder and CEO, of Rimac Group, which owns a 55 per cent stake in Bugatti Rimac revealed that the new V-16 will measure 39.3 inches. It will be nearly 16 inches larger than the current W-16. This engine will eventually be phased out after the production of Mistral roadsters and Bolide track-only cars ends. It has been confirmed that the newly developed engine will feature hybridization.

This is where the speculation begins. The German Auto Motor and Sport magazine claims that the V-16 is a massive 8.3-litre displacement, and was developed in collaboration with Cosworth. The engine can rev up to 9,000rpm and is powered by three electric motors. The combined output could be as high as 1,800 horsepower. The combustion engine alone is capable of around 1,000 horsepower.

The two electric motors will drive the front axle, while the third will power the rear axle. This latter motor is said to be built into an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engine/gearbox assembly will be 78.7″ long when you include the DCT. According to reports, Bugatti engineers have crammed in a 24.88-kWh battery that will allow for a 37-mile electric range.

AMS thinks that the Bugatti Chriron will reach 62 mph within two seconds, and 124 in less than five. It will take less than 10 seconds to go from 0 to 186mph and it could only take 25 seconds for 0-249mph. It will be electronically limited to 277 mph.

According to the report, only 250 vehicles will be produced. The Veyron had a production limit of 450 cars, while the Chiron had a 500-unit limit. The reveal will take place next month but deliveries to customers won’t begin until 2026. Price? Price?
